Click here to listen to the Podcast

What are affirmations and how do they work? These are the types of questions that I have found the most common. I love the use of affirmations and believe them to be very powerful tools for creating change, give clarity to our desires, and solidify goals. For those of you that would like to incorporate the use of affirmations in your daily life, but are not quite sure how to get started, or those of you that are already using them, but could benefit from a fresh perspective on their value. This recording is for you.

I hope you enjoy the following example of the purist form of using affirmations that I have ever witnessed. Please watch little Jessica’s daily affirmation chant.

Let Go and Live: Experiencing Emotional Freedom

By Jeanette Griffin

Having children is one of the best training grounds for learning the all too important lesson of letting go. We begin learning this from the time our child takes their first unassisted step. We feel mixed emotions as our child let’s go of our hand and steps away from us. It can be both exciting and sad to see them growing up and away. It doesn’t come easy for most moms to do it with ease; we want to hold onto our child(ren) for dear life as long as we can. It is within our human DNA to hold on. It is also taught to us by our parents, peers, and society to “hold on for dear life, “and “keep a grip on reality.”

Just as with having no control over our child growing and moving away, we cannot control our lives by placing rigid expectations on how it should be. This is one of the biggest causes of emotional stress...Read more...

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Stress Management for Body Tension Reduction

By Jeanette Griffin

There are many methods for reducing stress. Progressive muscle relaxation is used for reducing overall body tension. So what is it? PMR is a tension-reducing technique that takes the participant through a sequence of tensing and relaxing of specific muscle groups. The participant begins with the muscles in the face, tensing all of these muscles and holding the tension to the count of ten. They will then allow these muscles to relax for a count of ten. They will repeat the process working through each set of the muscles until all of the body has been relaxed.

With regular, dedicated practice, PMR can help you become familiar with your body’s tension habits...Read more...

Emotional Eating: Its Cause and How to Control it

By Jeanette Griffin

Can you relate to this? It’s dinner hour and you’re already worn down from the day but you’ve got to get the kids fed before you have to rush out the door to get the kids soccer practice and karate class. You get the dinner on the table but the kids are fighting, the phone is ringing, and no one wants to sit down to eat. You grab a few quick bites as you clean up the mess and get everyone out the door. Later that night you start hearing the Ben & Jerry’s calling from the freezer, eat three scopes, and convince yourself that you deserved a treat after the long, hard day you had. Finally the kids are in bed and it’s time to check emails and relax in front of the TV. The bag of chips in the cabinet starts sounding pretty good right about now. This spree of mindless grazing most likely had nothing to do with hunger—this type of eating is more like the result of... Read more...

As mothers we are told how important it is to have routines. Routines help our children feel secure and keep the household running smoothly. They make for a less stressed life. Practicing Mindful Parenting

By Jeanette Griffin

The relationship between a child and a parent can often include conversations that can leave a parent flustered and feeling as if they’re not being heard. You know the scenario where the child asks if they can have that certain toy as you’re rushing through the store and they keep asking and then it can result into a full blown tantrum. Or you know the one where you ask your child to clean up their room and a day later the dirty socks are still lying on the floor toys and books are all around the room. What do we do? Read more...

Do You Get Your 8 Hours?

By Jeanette Griffin
Busy moms have busy lives. Who has time for sleep, right? A good night’s rest is often one of the first things to go with the birth of a child. Lack of sleep is one of the mom job requirements. All of those middle of the night feedings, staying up late with sick kids, and those bad dream nights. A mom is also a multi-tasking machine. We try to get it all done before the day’s end and for some moms that often means working well into the evening after the kids are in bed. Read more...

Every working mom has experienced Working Mom guilt at some point or another. The Power of Gratitude Journaling

By Jeanette Griffin

As a busy mom, I know how easy it is to get caught up in the small stuff and get stuck there sometimes. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, an article by Richard Carlson, PhD, states that we should not "Ignore problems or pretend they do not exist.” One thing that I have found helpful to me when I begin to get too caught up in the trivial things in life is to find things to be grateful for. Gratitude is a powerful antidote to stress. It takes our focus off of our problems in life and allows us to reconnect with the things that are good. Read more...

So Stressed Out?

There are more women stressed today than in our mother's day. Why?

By Jeanette Griffin

Did you know that women enjoy their free time less than men?

The moms of today are carrying a heavier load. New research has shed some light on the why. It has shown that women dealing with the pressures of life become even more caught up in our care taking, and nurturing side as a means to deal with stress. This is compounded by personal and societal pressures to be the perfect caretakers of our families, and homes. Research suggests women still feel more responsible for taking care of children and housework, even if their spouses are pitching in more than they once did.

The women of our society have been socialized to be the caretakers of others. There are still more
women than men that are juggling career, family, and their home. Read more …

Mom Time in Two, Five, or Fifteen Minutes

By Jeanette Griffin

As a mom I know how hectic life can get but I also know how important it is to take care of myself and how hard it can be to find time do to it. We all can fit in two, five, or fifteen minutes. Moms do so much for everyone else; we deserve a few minutes of me time.

It’s important that we moms don’t forget ourselves in the busyness of our hectic lives though. When we let ourselves get worn down everyone suffers. This can lead to stress, exhaustion, and a sense of being overwhelmed. To take a few minutes each day to nurture yourself and find healthy ways to relax and relieve stress.

Terri Hatcher Getting Hatched

Terrie Hatcher a busy mom and actress wrote the following entry in her blog GetHatched. “Motherhood. Career. Relationships. Friendships. The more experienced I've become at all aspects of being a woman, (and by experienced I do mean OLDER) the more I realize and treasure that I am part of a magnificent community.
Women, in all of our multi-tasking, chore-juggling, diverse-life role-playing glory, are the force behind everything. We are the caregivers, the nurturers, the lovers, and teachers. We do the laundry, clean the house, feed the pets, drive the carpool, and as if that wasn't enough of a job, we often bring home the bacon. (And then cook it, too!)
We graciously take on these responsibilities because we have big hearts and deep wells of commitment. But the weight of all of this too often leaves us drained and craving support of our own."

Five Minutes Away from Relaxation

Meditation for busy mom’s
By Jeanette Griffin

When the pressure of parenthood begins to build it is natural to look for ways to de-stress. A Busy mom’s life can leave us feeling overloaded and overwhelmed and it is natural to want relief. Sometimes the means by which many moms look for relief are not productive or healthy. Such as overeating, smoking, drinking, even excessive exercise can be harmful. There are many stress management techniques and one of the most well-know is Meditation. Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. It was originally intended to help deepen the understanding of sacred and mystical forces of life. Today, meditation is used for relaxation and stress reduction. It has been known for its ability to calm and restore peace.

Mayo Clinic stated “Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health.”

As a busy Mom it can be difficult to find 30 minutes to sit, let alone to sit quietly. Meditation is not difficult to do; it does not need to be done on a regular base or in extensive sessions. Short, frequent meditation can offer some of the biggest gains.

Try to be mindful throughout the day and notice moments within your day that you can take five minutes to slow your mind, and body.

An Organized Life = A Balanced Life

By Jeanette Griffin

Cynthia Ewer Editor, Organized Home and author of Houseworks: How to Live Clean, Green and Organized at Home Stated "Clutter can clog the smooth workings of any home, imposing heavy costs on the household." The "clutter clog" not only creates of stress, but it can also be caused by stress.

Often times the emotions tied up with stress will cause us to lose the interest in organizing life, but this disorganization can lead to greater stress. When the morning rush is met with looking for misplaced keys, shoes, phones, or paperwork, it adds to those “life spinning out of control” feelings. Read more ...

The 4 Most Common Mommy Stressors

By Jeanette Griffin

Every mom stresses. For many moms the worrying begins before their child is even born. She worries if she is eating well enough, taking the right vitamins, is the baby moving enough… Most moms would agree that the worries and concerns are all worth the extra heart burn with the first snuggle, the first smile, the first coo. Children enter our lives bearing gifts. They endear us from the get go and the new-parent euphoria can leave us with a case of temporary “New Parent Amnesia”. New Parent Amnesia puts us in a state where we lose all or most of our memory of our pre-parent life.

Our children also bring with them a whole new set of responsibilities. Responsibilities that can leave even the most prepared parent feeling overwhelmed and ill prepared. Parental stress doesn’t go away it only changes and takes on new facets Read more...
